Niu Shrine (Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture)

Niu Shrine is located approximately 4 km northeast of Lake Yogo in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture. The entrance to the shrine's grounds faces south across the Takatoki River to the east. Within the shrine grounds, surrounded by dense trees, a hall of worship and a main shrine are set up, offering comfort to many worshippers, especially during the consecutive holidays in May. Although the date of the shrine's founding is not clear, it is said that Niu Masato settled this area during the reign of Emperor Temmu and enshrined the deity Amatsu. Later, during the Tempyo period, the shrine was built in its present location.
The address of Niu Shrine is 1087 Shimotanu, Yogo-machi, Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, at 35°33'24" N latitude and 136°13'40" E longitude. The deities are Takaoka-gami and Niutsu-hime-no-mikoto, and the annual festival is held on April 3. founded in 764, Tenpyo-hoji 8, the shrine has been reconstructed and rebuilt many times throughout its history. Originally located about 900 meters south of the present site, it was moved to its present location in 870, in the 12th year of the Jougan Era. In the Edo period (1603-1867), the shrine was called "Niu Myojingu" (Niu Myojingu Shrine), and the main hall is made of Nagare-zukuri oak. Within the precincts of the shrine are Hiruko Shrine, Inari Shrine, Niu Myo Shrine, and Nojin, and it is closely related to Kozanji Temple and the Sugayama Temple of the Daigosan Shingon sect of Buddhism.
