Anegawa Old Battlefield

The Anegawa ancient battlefield is the site of the Battle of Anegawa, which occurred in June 1570 in Omi Province (present-day Shiga Prefecture). The battle arose from a feud between the allied forces of Nobunaga Oda and Nagamasa Asai and Yoshikage Asakura. About 18,000 Asai and Asakura forces and 28,000 Oda and Tokugawa forces fought across the Anegawa River, and the Oda forces won. It is said that about 2,500 people from both armies were killed in the battle, and the Anegawa River was dyed red with blood.
Around the old battlefield, there remain cenotaphs and historical sites for the dead, and signboards telling the story of the battle. Important historical sites include "Jinden," the site of Nagamasa Asai's main camp, and "Jinkake no Yanagi," where Nobunaga Oda commanded. On the north bank of the battlefield, there is the Mitamura clan building (the site of the main camp of Kageken Asakura) and the grave of Kiemon Endo, and on the south bank, there is a place where Nobunaga Oda is said to have hung a camp drum on a willow tree.
Currently, vehicular traffic is restricted due to the aging of the bridge near the Anegawa Nomura Bridge, but this place of great historical value is well worth a visit. The Anegawa ancient battlefield is a valuable place that tells an important history of the Warring States Period in Japan.
