Kaigome Ancient Tomb

Kakigome Kofun is a forward-rear circular burial mound located in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture. It is approximately 60 m long, and over 80 m when the moat is included. In 1881, a stone chamber and many artifacts were discovered during the cultivation of the rear part of the circle. These artifacts included an iron spear, flower-shaped metal fittings, a sling, a tube ball, a Chinese mirror, and an iron sword, which were recorded in the "Revised Journal of Sakata County, Omi Province" (Revised Omi Kuni Sakata Gunshi). In addition, a stone chamber more than 3.6m wide and an arrangement of secondary burial objects have been confirmed.
A survey conducted in 1989 confirmed that this burial mound was a front-recessed circular mound with the main axis directly to the north and that the posterior portion of the mound had been cut away. Some of the Sue ware remaining at the local Kitagozato Elementary School is believed to have been excavated from this burial mound, indicating a date around the latter half of the 5th century.
According to local tradition, this burial mound was the tomb of Wakanoge Futamata-o, a prince of Emperor Ojin, and was designated as a prefectural historic site in 1969. Today, Kakigome Kofun is located on a flat area south of Nagahama Chausuyama, and a small shrine has been built in the front part of the tomb, providing a quiet atmosphere for visitors. To access the site, visitors can take a bus from Nagahama Station on the JR Hokuriku Line or get off at the Nagahama IC on the Hokuriku Expressway and drive to the site.
