The birthplace of Ryogen, a famous Tendai Sect priest, is believed to be Mount Hiei. Because of his unprecedented development of Hieizan both academically and culturally, Ryogen was called the "founder of the revival of Hieizan" and was given the rank of high priest for the first time since Gyoki. Ryogen is also popularly known as "Gensan Daishi" because he died on New Year's Day, and is also famous as the originator of omikuji. The main hall, rebuilt in 1780, features a large double-layered roof.
