Anrakuji Temple Garden (Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture)

Anrakuji Temple is located in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, and is associated with Ashikaga Takauji, a member of the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. The temple features a 500-square-meter garden with Mt. Ibuki and Mt. Hiei in the background. The garden is a sansuikaiyu-style crane and turtle garden created by Muso Kunishi. At the center of the garden is a pond modeled after Lake Biwa. This garden was originally established in the middle of the Kamakura period as Anraku Seisha, on the site of the former villa of Fujiwara no Fuhito. The temple was founded by Zen monk Butsuchi, a high disciple of Seiichi Kokushi, founder of Tofukuji Temple. The temple was protected by Ashikaga Takauji, but was destroyed by fire during the Anegawa Battle in the Warring States Period, and was rebuilt in the early Edo Period by Ii Naotaka, lord of the Hikone domain. The principal image is a Muromachi period Shakyamuni Buddha, and the statues of Zenji Butsuchi and Daruma are Kamakura period works. Ashikaga Takauji's nail graves, self-portraits and tablets from his last will and testament are preserved in the temple. Anrakuji Temple is known as the famous garden of Muso Kokushi, and the rows of pine trees along the approach to the temple are designated as protected trees by Nagahama City. The temple also plays an important role as a sacred site for the 27 famous temples of Omi Kohoku and the 108 sacred sites of Lake Biwa. This temple is the perfect place to experience the Japanese sentiment and to appreciate the beauty of history and nature.
