Shakudoji Temple

The temple located at the foot of Mt. Mikao is a temple of the Toyoyama school of Shingon Buddhism. The temple is home to a statue of the eleven-faced Kannon (Goddess of Mercy), said to have been created in the late Heian period (794-1192) and designated as a national important cultural property. The statue is made of a single piece of zelkova wood, and there is a trace of crimson on the lips. The lips have a trace of crimson, suggesting that the statue was a very colorful Buddhist image at that time. The statue of Kannon has a loose form, and her robe is draped in a flowing manner. It gives an impression of meekness and serenity. The Kannon also appears in Yasushi Inoue's "Hoshi to Matsuri" (The Star and the Festival), and is known as the Kannon of childbirth.
