Josinji Temple Garden

The Three-storied Pagoda at Hogon-ji Temple in Chikubujima is a replica of the stupa that originally housed the Buddha's ashes. Believed to have been destroyed by fire in the early Edo period, the "three-storied pagoda" was restored in May 2000, some 350 years after it was built. The restored pagoda was built according to ancient building codes. The four pillars are decorated with 32 celestial deities, and the four walls are decorated with the eight major priests of the sect. Each pillar and long chopstick is decorated with intaglio (coloring) and peony arabesques; these decorations were painted in the classical manner using rock chips and glue, making them less durable and prone to peeling. This new coloring is only used specially for new construction, and the interior of the pagoda is generally not open to the public.
