Cihikubu Island Hogonji Temple Boat Corridor

The "Funaroroshiki" is a passageway leading from the Hogonji Kannondo Hall to the Tokubusuma Shrine at the 30th of the 33 sacred places in the western part of Japan, and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. This corridor is approximately 30 meters long and is a valuable reminder of the architectural style of the Momoyama Period. In particular, the name "Funaroryo" comes from the fact that the corridor was built by reusing materials from the ship's yoke of the "Nihonmaru," the Japanese-style pleasure boat used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi during his invasion of Korea.
The funarorogi has a unique structure built on a sloping site, and is characterized by its stage-structured foundation. The roof is divided into low and high sections, with a sloping, pitched decorative attic with visible rafters on the ceiling, and lattice windows between the pillars. The eaves of the funaboratory have black lacquered rafters and gilded ornamental metal fittings, giving the building a beautiful appearance.
The restoration and preservation of the Funarorou (corridor) took place over a period of 74 months from 2013 to 2020, and the stains, fading, peeling, and missing carvings were repaired, restoring it to its former beauty. This has further enhanced the value of the building as a historic structure.
As for access, the Funaroshita is located on Chikubu Island and is accessible only by boat. There are regular boat services from Nagahama and Imazu ports, with the last service at 1:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. On the way from the landing to the funarorouji via the approach road, visitors can enjoy beautiful scenery reminiscent of a corridor bridge in a castle. The boat corridor is also located in a luxurious environment with a view of Lake Biwa from the renko windows.
