Cihikubu Island Hogonji Temple Sanjunoto

The three-story pagoda at Chikubujima Hogonji Temple is a replica of a Buddhist stupa that originally housed the ashes of Lord Buddha. In May 2000, this "three-story pagoda," which is believed to have been destroyed by fire in the early Edo period, was restored for the first time in about 350 years. The restored pagoda was built according to ancient construction methods. The four pillars are decorated with 32 heavenly deities, and the four walls are decorated with the eight high priests of the Shingon sect. Each pillar and the long chopsticks are decorated with ungenshoku (coloring) and peony arabesque patterns, but these decorations were painted in the classical manner using rock paints and glue water, which makes them less durable and more prone to peeling off. This new hue is special only for the new construction, and the interior of the tower is not usually open to the public.
