Karamon Gate of Hogan Temple

Karamon" in Hogan-ji Temple means a gate with a Chinese gable. This "Karamon" was originally the "Gokurakumon" built at the Toyokuni Mausoleum in Higashiyama, Kyoto, and was constructed to enshrine Hideyoshi. It was moved by Katagiri Katsumoto, who was appointed by Toyotomi Hideyori as a contractor, and was built adjacent to the Kannondō Hall due to the condition of the land. The building has a cypress bark roof, is entirely painted in black lacquer with gold gilt ornamental metal fittings, and the toadstool in the center of the rainbow beam is surrounded by carvings of phoenixes, pine trees, rabbits, and peonies. In addition, the two large panelled doors and walls are decorated with carvings of peony arabesques in rich colors, and it is known as a luxurious and gorgeous "Karamon" of the Momoyama style.
As for literature, there are descriptions in "Giyenjikko Nikki" and "Shunjikki" that the Gokurakubashi Bridge at Osaka Castle was relocated to Toyokuni Shrine. In 2006, the "Osaka Castle Painting Screen" discovered at Eggenberg Castle in Austria depicts the "Gokurakubashi Bridge" that was built in the northern part of the Osaka Castle Honmaru, which is believed to be the predecessor of the "Karamon". Based on these evidences, it is highly possible that the "Karamon" is the only remaining structure of the fantastic Osaka Castle that was built by Hideyoshi.
