Ryoshuji Temple is a Zen temple of the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism located in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, and was founded by Hojo Tokiyori, an important figure of the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The temple is known for having been founded in 1262 by the monk Tenzan, and has passed through many historical events. In particular, the temple has continued to carry on its history despite the military fire of Oda Nobunaga and natural disasters. One of the temple's most attractive features is its beautiful plum grove. More than 200 white and red plum trees in the precinct garden herald the arrival of spring to visitors. The temple also has a monument to the haiku poet Matsuo Basho, who visited the temple, allowing visitors to follow in his footsteps. Furthermore, the temple is home to the 28-meter bronze Nagahama Biwako Daibutsu (Great Buddha), which is set against Lake Biwa and leaves a deep impression on visitors.
