Iifukuji Temple is an ancient temple founded by the monk Gyoki in 735. Once devastated, the temple was rebuilt by Saicho in 799. The temple was a sacred site for mountain Buddhism and boasted the dignity of being one of the annexes of Mt. In the Middle Ages, the temple was so large that it had its own army of monks, and it stabilized its fortunes under the patronage of the authorities of the time, but it declined with the end of the Edo shogunate. The temple is now abandoned and is usually managed by local residents. In the fall, "Chicken Foot Temple" is famous for its autumn foliage, and many people visit the temple every year to take a stroll in the autumn colors. The stone steps and moss-covered stone walls of the gentle approach to the temple are lined with 200 old trees, creating an ethereal scene. The main statue of the eleven-faced Kannon (Goddess of Mercy), which was passed down from generation to generation, is enshrined in the Mikao Pavilion in the Furuhashi area. Together with the adjacent Sengenkaku Pavilion, many cultural assets are preserved here, including the standing statue of Yakushi Nyorai (an important cultural property), the standing statues of the Twelve Divine Generals, and cultural assets designated by Shiga Prefecture. These cultural assets are also protected by local residents.
